Signed. The internet should be a place to express yourself, not the legal information that represents your body.
This applies to more than just performers, but also to people who are recognized by a transgender name, use shortened versions of their name "Jenny, Maggie->Jennifer, Margaret" or people who are hiding from stalkers or worse, while trying to maintain a normal life.
Reading the comments on related links gave me those examples and more, and I can't find any counter to it worth mentioning.
"To keep our community safe"?
Google+ tried to do this too, but they ended up reverting it. Facebook should take the hint.
The above is a Facebook status I will be making in the morning, but I know some people here also care about other places in the internet. I feel this topic, unlike many, is worth my effort to spread and try and fight. Thank you for your time, and/or signature.

I see use for that function. My cousin wants to change his facebook name for reasons. So he had to make a new facebook account. So I can see use for this. It'll also be useful for those idiots that want to change their facebook name and creates 5 different accounts.
