Gray's motivation to beat the Pewter Gym was amazing, he managed to stay awake for half an hour of his night long training session. When he awoke he was face down in Mankey poo with pidgey all over him, pecking.
As he got up he noticed his squirtle fighting a rattata along with a butterfry.
"Squirtle! You've been training all night?! You're the best Pokemon ever! Much better than my lazy metapod, where'd it go anyway?"
Squirtle pointed to the butterfry.
"It evolved?!" Gray exclaimed," I missed it evolve into its final and most powerful form?" He pimp slapped himself," We'll good on ya Butterfry!" He congratulated while running up and hugging it so hard it went purple (purpleer).
Even though his pokemon had been training all night long he wanted to make sure he didn't loose in front of Tene and Yob again so he set to work. His Pokemon continued fighting with new moves they'd learnt like rapid spin for Squirtle and sleep powder for Butterfry which amazed Gray and nearly made him all asleep in mankey poo again.
Gray himself started jogging around the route and doing all kinds of useless exercising. By the time it had reached late afternoon Squirlte and Butterfry were ready for battle and Gray was exhausted and sweaty, having to get hosed down by Squirtle's water gun and sprayed by Butterfry's sweet scent which ended up making a heap of Pokemon come after him and rub against him.
Yob and Tene came down to him and his Pokemon, stating that they had spent the whole day in the museum. The three once again headed back to Pewter gym.

Gray stood at one end of the arena, Tcanton at the other.
"Go Geodude!"
"Butterfry, I choose you!"
The battle was under way once again. Geodude swung at Butterfry with its fists but it flew up into the air, out of range, and used sleep power. As the dust landed on Geodude it drifted off to sleep.
"Butterfry use silver wind!"
As it slept, Geodude got buffeted by Buterfry's silver wind, bashing it continuously until it fainted. Gray jumped with joy, his butterfry hadn't even taken a hit.
"Go Onix!" Tcan yelled as he sent out his strongest Pokemon.
Butterfry flew up high again and tried using sleep powder on Onix but it was so big that it didn't work properly and Onix used rock throw, kicking rocks into the air with its tail. Butterfry tried to dodge them but got hit by one and fell out of the sky. As it was trying it get up Onix used rock tomb crushing it in a pile of rocks. It was minutes before anything happened. Onix cleared the rocks revealing Butterfry, unconscious.
Gray returned it with a grudge.
"Come on Squirtle, you can do it!"
Squirtle used water gun at Onix's face as soon as it came out and them rapid spin up its body. Onix stumbled back, then used slam. It's tail flew past whacking straight into Squirtle. As it got up it used bubble which didn't seem to do much damage to Onix, who then used rock tomb, enclosing Squirtle. This attack had knocked out Butterfry, Gray was worried.
Before Onix went up to clear the rocks, they started to move, Squirtle pushed his way out, struggling to stand. He had a flame of motivation in his eyes as Onix moved in to finish him off.
"Sqqqquuiirtttlle!!!!!" it yelled.
A white light covered Squirtle and it started to morph before revealing itself as a Wartortle. It had evolved.
Gray couldn't move from shock, then he started to cry with joy. His starter had evolved.
Wartortle used water gun again, this time knocking Onix right back. He then used rapid spin right into Onix's face. Onix tried using tackle but Wartortle managed to dodge and used water gun again, right along its body.
Onix, weakened hugely from the water tried to stay up.
"Finish it off with rapid spin, Wartortle!"
Wartortle lunged forward in its spin but Onix quickly dodged and used rock tomb, enclosing Wartorlte.
"It's surely knocked out now," Tcan smirked.
After some minutes had passed Onix moved to clear to rocks over Grays' surely unconscious wartortle. As he cleared the rocks above the Pokemon, Wartortle was there, not unconscious but ready to lunge forward, which he did. He tackled straight into Onix's face, making it crash into the arena wall, then down hard on the floor, unconscious.
Gray had won. He was so overjoyed as Tcan gave him the Boulder Badge. Yob and Tene clapped and Gray, now thinking he was a professional started giving battle tips to Tcan.
"Noobs...." Tcan sighed.
Now with his first badge, Gray's journey was truly underway.
